Operation Wallacea –  Careers in conservation webinar!

Operation Wallacea has run biodiversity research expeditions for the last 30 years to a series of biodiversity hotspots worldwide. Since 1995 we have been helping university students from around the world gain valuable experience and get their hands dirty with real biodiversity research! We work with a network of over 200 academics leading cutting edge research projects that help to inform local conservation management strategies. Over the 30 years that Opwall have been running expeditions, volunteers have contributed to:

  • the discovery of 81 species new to science
  • published over 670+ academic papers in peer-review journals
  • helped to create 6 Protected Areas and National Parks all over the world

The talk is a great chance to hear all about why you might want to consider a future in the field of wildlife conservation or research, if you’re unsure of what you want to do. The talk will also cover the skills needed and how to go about getting as much experience as possible. After the short talk, we will open the floor to questions for our amazing panel of experts.

Cambridge University Engineering society Access week

Access Week is a unique opportunity tailored for students from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in pursuing Engineering at Cambridge, applying in October 2025 and October 2026 cycles. Our aim is to dispel some of the myths surrounding studying Engineering at Cambridge and help prospective students learn more about the application process. Throughout the week, we have planned a variety of sessions:

-Question form – for all potential applicants to ask questions which will be answered by current Cambridge engineering students. -Guidance on general admission walkthrough – including reformed personal statement, college selections, admission test (ESAT) and interview preparation through articles. A live webinar will be held for applicants to raise questions. -Articles about Cambridge Engineering course structures. -Introduction to Cambridge Engineering specialisations.

Creative Industries Unlocked – Applications are OPEN for Y12 & First-Year College Students

In Creative Industries Unlocked, a 4-week online programme, students will learn about working in the creative and cultural sector and the skills needed to succeed. They will learn how skills gained by studying an Arts or Humanities degree will set you up for a career in the creative industries.

Students will complete online sessions on Creative TechnologyPublishing and Archiving and hear from professionals working in the creative sector.

Programme dates are 4:30 to 6:00 PM on March 4th, March 11th, March 18th, and March 25th, 2025.

Stories about Hollywood’s Hippest Mathematics. A Celebration of Women and Girls in STEM

We are excited to announce ‘Stories about Hollywood’s Hippest Mathematics. A Celebration of Women and Girls in STEM’
Date & Location: 12th February 2025: 4 – 5 pm, School of Mathematics, Fry Building, Woodland Road BS8 IUG.

To celebrate Women and Girls in STEM Day, the School of Mathematics is showcasing some of our leading and emerging talent in this space to increase the visibility of female contributions to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, but also to inspire women, girls and underrepresented genders to study these exciting subjects. Our celebration will start with a talk by Professor Nina Snaith: Stories about Hollywood’s Hippest Mathematics: Random Matrices and Primes. Nina will tell us how her work has inspired Hollywood, and we will follow this on with a panel discussion by female academics, who will share some of the interesting work that they have done and how this has made a difference.

This event is open to the public. We particularly encourage families who would like to learn more about mathematicians’ work, as well as young people who are trying to decide what they would like to do after they complete their GCSE study. These activities will be followed by a free pizza reception (5-5:45 pm), where you can chat with the speaker and the panel members.

This is a hybrid event. Book via Ticket Tailor now! Note that under-18s must confirm on the sign-up form that they’ll be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Particle Physics Masterclass (for Sixth-Form Students)

University of Bristol’s Particle Physics Masterclass – Friday, 11 April 2025 (10:15 am-3:45 pm, lunch and snacks provided)

Sixth-form students interested in physics are welcome to join us in person for our annual Masterclass workshop.

Students will:

  • perform complex computer simulations
  • design particle detectors
  • talk to our scientists at CERN via a live video link
  • test their knowledge with a quiz

There will be prizes for the best detector and the quiz winners!

Students must complete our application form to be eligible for a place.  Applicants will be notified if they have a place, usually within a few weeks of submission.

PLEASE NOTE: we will only accept one application per student, and we can accept up to 12 students from each school/college.  Successful applicants will be offered a free ticket.

No further applications will be taken after 1 pm on Monday, 31st March 2025, or when the tickets have all been allocated - whichever happens first. If tickets sell out, we will update our web page. 

Teachers: Please note that you cannot complete applications for students. You can email particle-physics@bristol.ac.uk  for more information or ask if you will attend the workshop with your students.

Venture Into Vet

Venture into Vet offers year 10, 11 and 12 students hands-on experience working with animals and taster lectures and introduces them to teaching spaces at Langford Vet School. Students will discover the stables, the Clinical Teaching Labs and the dairy farm.

The event will take place on Saturday, 29th March, from 9:30 to 4:00 at the Bristol Veterinary School in Langford.

Pathways2Property

Free Real Estate Insight Day with their Industry partners on 26th March in Bristol in order to help students discover more about careers within the property Industry.

Applications can be found here on our website here and will close on 16th February. Priority will be given to those students that live in the local areas and fit within our criteria however do contact us directly if you have students that you feel should get a place due to other circumstances.

Students will go on a site visit, work on a small project and have a Q&A session with both current and recent Real Estate graduates and apprentices who are now working in the Industry.  All events are fully funded by Pathways2property including travel costs to and from the venue.

Students that have attended any one of our programmes will subsequently be able to take part in our work experience and e-mentoring programme and they will also be able to apply for a bursary of up to £30,000 should they go on to study a property related degree at any University.  If they apply to study a Real Estate course at the University of Reading they will be guaranteed a contextual offer and will automatically be given a Welcome bursary once enrolled.

BEMA Engineering Apprenticeships

12th of February 2024 from 4:30pm – 7:00pm, BEMA is holding an open evening for students interested in an engineering apprenticeship to come along to the BEMA Training Centre in Yate with their parents.

Meet the Staff, talk to potential Employers, current apprentices who started in September 24 and see the engineering workshops and facilities.

National Highways

National Highways in partnership with Date Inspiration Group (DigData)are delivering virtual work experiences on Microsoft Teams.
These events provide  insights into emerging careers and help students build skills that will enhance their future education and employment choices and will include:

• A 45-minute briefing with the National Highways team
• The opportunity to complete a career challenge at their own pace
• Certification upon completion

The career challenge is designed to develop key employability skills such as problem solving, data literacy, storytelling, and presentation.

The event is also open to Teachers and Parent/Carers, they will need to sign up via this link
